Draft Minutes
Present: Marcia Lambert, Sara Fiori, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Maryanne Piechocki, Sandra Power, Ellen Talkowsky, Judith Wolfe.  Absent: Bev Moustakis.  Visitors:  Julie Rose, Lynn Murray

Meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M.

Review of minutes of meeting February 22, 2011.  The minutes are amended as follows:
Clean Sweeps – The event is scheduled for May 7, 2001.  Marcia Lambert will update the recycling instructions for participants.
Lady of Salem – A preview of the project will be presented during Heritage Days 2011.   The project is scheduled to be launched in 2012.

Old Business

  • Clean Sweeps – The official name for the event is Clean Salem Green Salem. Flyers, signup sheets are to sent out to about one hundred addresses.  Information about the schedule and recycling will be included.  Julie Rose will contact the Renewable Energy Task Force and Salem Sound about the project.
The County Sheriff’s office is to be contacted to see about involving the Trial Court Volunteers to assist with the work of the day.  Sandi will also speak with the Engine House about providing pizza for the volunteers.  Maryanne volunteered that her husband was willing to pick up and deliver the pizza to the Common.  

The need to prepare packets of information to distribute to the “cleanup” volunteers was discussed.  It was suggested that volunteers meet at Ellen’s office on  April 12th at 1:00 P.M.
  •  Salem Recycles - Julie Rose led the discussion about various activities which could take place during the Clean Salem Green Salem day such as creating art with plastic bottles, raffling recycling bins, creating art projects with recycled paper etc.  
  • Plant Sale – Ellen has a notice on the Salem Events Calendar and on the Committee’s website.  Maryanne and Sandi are to co-chair the event.  Sandi will enlist her list of volunteers.  Maryanne will call attention to the project by adorning her dogs with signs when she walks them about town.  Issues regarding calling attention to the location of the Plant Salem project followed.  Large posters were suggested.
Maryanne offered to provide a planted herb garden window box to be raffled was proposed.

  • Lady of Salem - The project launch date has been postponed to 2012.  Maryanne, Sam  and Pam Lombardini  met with Mayor Driscoll on March 11th.  They are expecting a letter from the Mayor for use in promoting the project.  They will debut the project during Heritage days.  Lady of Salem participants will pay $500.00 by check to the City thereafter the funds will be made available to the Committee for its use.  Participants will hire their own artists.
  • Traffic Island – Sandi and Ellen met and updated the Memorandum of Understanding. Sandi drafted a letter to participants.  The plan is to have all the needed sponsors by May 20th and that the islands are planted by June 1st so that signs can be set up at each site.  There are 35 islands.  Sponsors are still being sought.
  • Public Spaces – Marcia reported that the space in front of the Adriatic Restaurant needs attention.  The area needs hardscaping as there is no water. There is a potential sponsor.
  • Active Duty Service – Marcia led the continued discussion regarding the possibility of the Committee sponsoring a Traffic Island that honors those doing active military duty.  Site suggestions, plant source suggestions, maintenance considerations, were among the topics addressed. Discussion is to be continued.
  • Annual Report – Ellen prepared and presented the annual Committee Report. All expressed their sincere gratitude to her and for her effort.  Mary Ellen is continuing to work on gathering Committee related photographs for display on the website.  
  • Banners – Discussion was tabled.
     10        Artist Row – It was noted that plant baskets that had hung on the fencing that borders Artist Row have gone missing.  At the MBTA station  one of the three bucket planters has been broken.  Mary Ellen reported that in one incident planted pansies were     stolen overnight.  Maryanne will be planting the MBTA planters this season.

Motion to Adjourn was proffered and passed.
